Our Concept

"1777 Café Restaurant Bar": The name marks the founding year of the community for the good and the common good (GGG) based at the same location. In the 1777, we present a cosmopolitan offer with a European focus. We are particularly taken with the Viennese coffee house culture, interpreted in a modern way, and the uncomplicated Mediterranean food culture.

Based on the needs of our guests, that change during the day, our offer also changes. Just as the stage design on a theater set changes with a new scene, the concept for the 1777 also changes as the day progresses.

In the morning we offer an innovative Viennese coffee offer, interpreted in a modern way and tailored to Switzerland. At lunchtime we offer our guests a small menu of the day, a selection of salads, baguettes and a counter with all kinds of meat and cheese specialities.

The afternoon offer is again oriented towards the Viennese coffee house culture, interpreted in a modern way. The evening is characterised by a beautiful wine offer, a versatile cheese and meat counter and an extended aperitif offer. We also offer a nice selection of drinks, with a special focus on local or special products.

We also offer our guests a culinary workshop. Guests can choose to make their own baguettes, salads, meat and cheese, or choose one of our classics. In this workshop, for example, you can put together your own individual, needs-oriented selection using a simple system. We also offer our two specialities all day long: The 1777 burger and the pastrami sandwich.

Design

The restaurant is located in the middle of Basel's old town, nestled in the historic Schmiedenhof square. The interior of the 1777 restaurant can best be described as a "workshop with trendy, urban design and lots of retro charm". We work with modern design elements from Vitra, such as the Prouve table combination or the Eames Wire Chair. We also use the well-known horgenglarus chairs. The furnishings are complemented by vintage retro elements, hand-picked together with various partners.

The Schmiedenhof square is also of great importance. With the redesign and due to the very central and idyllic location, this square has become a kind of "piazza" in the middle of the city. Different plants, a beautiful tree and a herb planting contribute much to the charm. A vintage bench and a staircase complete the beautiful square.
